Telegram "Delete for both": does the other person know, and can it be recovered?
In a private chat, Telegram lets you delete any message for both sides — yours or theirs, at any time, with no time limit. The other person gets no notification: the message simply disappears from their chat.
What it cannot reach is anything that was copied before the deletion — a screenshot, a forward, a notification that already landed on their phone. Telegram removes the message, not the copies.
What "Delete for both" actually does
When you delete a message, Telegram shows a checkbox — "Also delete for [name]". Tick it, and the message is removed from Telegram's servers and from every device of both people in that chat. Leave it unticked, and the message disappears only for you; the other person still has it.
- No time limit. Unlike some messengers, Telegram does not restrict this to the first few minutes. A message from last year can be deleted for both today.
- Their messages too. In a private chat you can delete the other person's messages for both sides, not only your own.
- Whole chats. Deleting a chat offers the same option — "Also delete for [name]" clears the entire conversation on both sides at once.
Does the other person get notified?
No. There is no "this message was deleted" placeholder and no alert — the message just stops being there. If they had the chat open, they may notice a gap; if not, there is nothing to notice.
That is also the honest answer to "can I unsend a Telegram message": yes, completely and silently, as long as it is a private or secret chat. The only question is whether someone already saw it or made a copy.
Groups and "where possible"
Groups work differently. You can delete your own messages for everyone, but deleting other members' messages for everyone requires admin rights. When you select several messages and some of them can only be removed for you, Telegram shows "Delete for all members where possible" — "where possible" means it deletes for everyone only the messages you have the right to, and the rest just for you.
Can the other person recover it?
Not from Telegram. There is no recycle bin, no undo on their side, and no support request that brings it back — once deleted for both, Telegram itself no longer has the message. Apps and websites that promise to "recover" it either do not work or are after the account itself; the tell is that they ask for a phone number and the login code.
What can survive is anything that existed outside that chat before the deletion:
- The notification. If the message arrived while their phone was locked, the text may still sit in the notification shade, and Android's notification history can keep it for up to a day.
- Screenshots and forwards. A forwarded copy lives in another chat; a screenshot lives in their gallery. Neither is touched.
- A bot that saved it on arrival. Since Telegram Business opened chatbots to everyone, a person can connect a bot that keeps a copy of each message in the private chats they choose, the moment it arrives. Deleting the message later removes it from Telegram — not from a copy already made.
Both sides of the same fact. If you send something, assume the other person could have kept it — "Delete for both" is a way to clean up a chat, not a guarantee that nobody saw it. And if you are on the receiving end and want deleted messages kept, the only thing that works is saving them before they are deleted.
Secret chats and auto-delete
In secret chats every deletion is for both sides — there is no "only for me" option — and messages exist only on the two devices, never in the cloud. Auto-delete timers work the same way: when the timer runs out, the message is removed for both people, again without a notification.
Common questions
Does Telegram notify the other person when I delete a message for both?
No. The message disappears from their chat without any placeholder or alert. They may notice only if they were looking at the chat at that moment.
Is there a time limit on deleting a Telegram message for both sides?
Not in private chats. Any message, yours or the other person's, can be deleted for both sides at any time, even long after it was sent.
What does "Delete for both sides where possible" mean?
You selected several messages and some of them can only be deleted for you — usually other members' messages in a group where you are not an admin. Telegram deletes for everyone what it can and the rest only for you.
Can a message deleted for both be recovered?
Not from Telegram — it no longer exists there. Only copies made before the deletion survive: a notification on the phone, a screenshot or forward, or a copy saved on arrival by a bot connected via Telegram Business.
Can I see a message the other person deleted for both?
Only if something saved it before it was deleted. A bot connected to your account through Telegram Business keeps a copy of each incoming message in the chats you choose, so a later deletion shows you what was removed. Messages deleted before connecting cannot be shown.
