Telegram Clear History: what it does, “for both”, and can it be undone
Clear History removes all messages from a chat but keeps the chat itself in your list. Delete Chat removes the messages and the chat. In a private chat, both can be done just for you or for both people — Telegram asks with a checkbox.
Either way, once the few-second “Undo” window has passed, the cleared messages can't be recovered: Telegram has no trash. If the other person clears history for both, your copy disappears too, without any notification.

Clear History is the one to use when you want an empty chat but plan to keep talking — the person stays at the same place in your list, with notification settings intact.
What “for both” means
In a private chat Telegram offers a checkbox: “Also clear for [name]”. Ticked — the messages are deleted from Telegram's servers and from both people's devices. Not ticked — they vanish only for you; the other person keeps the full history and isn't told anything.
The other person has the same power: they can clear the history for both at any time, and your copy disappears without warning. Telegram shows no “history cleared” message. More on what Telegram doesn't notify.
In groups and channels
- As a member, Clear History removes messages only on your side. Everyone else still sees them.
- As an admin with delete rights, you can delete messages for everyone, but that is done message by message or by selecting several — not with Clear History.
- Channels can't be cleared by subscribers at all; only the owner and admins remove posts.
Can cleared history be recovered?
Only during the few seconds when Telegram shows “Undo” at the bottom of the screen. After that:
- If you cleared it only for yourself, the other person still has everything — ask them to forward what you need.
- If it was cleared for both, Telegram has no copy. What can survive is what existed outside the chat: an earlier export from Telegram Desktop, forwards, screenshots, photos saved to the gallery.
- Support can't help, and “recovery” services that ask for your login code are trying to take over your account.

Keeping a copy when the other side clears the chat
You can't stop someone from clearing a chat for both. You can keep your own copy of what they sent: a bot connected through Telegram's chatbot section (in your profile: “Edit” → “Chatbots”; Premium not needed) saves the messages of the private chats you choose as they arrive. When the other person deletes messages, the bot sends you what they said. It works from the moment you connect it, not retroactively.
