Accidentally deleted a Telegram chat: can you recover the history?

First: are you sure it's deleted?

Chats often look deleted when they are not. Before anything else:

• Search for the person or group with the search bar at the top. Search covers every chat, including archived ones.
• Open the archive — the folder above your chat list. Telegram can move quiet chats there on its own.
• Switch to “All chats” if you use folders. A chat outside the current folder's filter is simply hidden.

If you deleted it only for yourself

When you delete a private chat, Telegram asks whether to delete it for the other person too. If that box was not ticked, the conversation is gone only on your side. The other person still has every message — ask them to forward the important ones back to you, or to make an export from Telegram Desktop.

The same goes for groups: leaving a group or deleting it from your list removes it only for you. Rejoin through an invite link and the history that is visible to members comes back. Groups and channels deleted by their owner, however, are gone for everyone.

If you deleted it for both

Then Telegram has no copy at all: the messages are removed from its servers and from both people's devices. Neither recovery apps nor support can change that — and anyone asking for your phone number and login code “to recover the chat” is trying to take over your account. What can still exist:

• A chat export made earlier in Telegram Desktop (Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram data, or “Export chat history” in the chat's menu).
• Forwards to Saved Messages or other chats, and screenshots.
• Photos and videos in your gallery, if “Save to Gallery” was on.
• Another device that is offline — a laptop or tablet that hasn't synced yet may still show the chat. Keep it offline and export or screenshot what you need.

How to avoid losing a chat next time

• Export important chats now and then from Telegram Desktop — it is a one-off snapshot, but it survives anything.
• Keep a running copy with a bot connected through Telegram's chatbot section (in your profile: “Edit” → “Chatbots”; Premium not needed). It saves messages in the private chats you choose as they arrive, so if either side deletes them, the copy remains with the bot. It does not cover groups, channels or secret chats, and it starts from the moment you connect it.

Common questions

Can I undo deleting a Telegram chat?

Only for a few seconds: right after deleting or clearing a chat, Telegram shows an “Undo” button at the bottom of the screen. After it disappears, the deletion can't be reversed.

Can Telegram support recover a deleted chat?

No. Once a chat is deleted, Telegram no longer has it, and support cannot restore deleted messages.

I deleted the chat only for me — can I get it back?

Not on your side, but the other person still has the full conversation. Ask them to forward what you need or to export the chat from Telegram Desktop.

Can I recover a deleted Telegram group?

If you only left it or removed it from your list, rejoin via an invite link. If the owner deleted the group, it is gone for everyone.

Does Telegram keep a backup I can restore?

No. Telegram has no Google Drive or iCloud chat backup; chats live in Telegram's cloud, and deleting a chat deletes it there too. Desktop export is the only built-in way to keep a copy.
