Someone deleted your Telegram chat: how to tell and what to do
In Telegram, either person can delete a private chat for both sides — all of it or message by message, at any time and without any notification. If a chat disappeared from your list or went empty and you didn't delete anything, the other person most likely did.
A chat deleted for both cannot be recovered: Telegram no longer has those messages. But before drawing conclusions, it takes a minute to rule out something else — step by step below.
First, rule out other causes

Can you find out who deleted it?
Telegram doesn't show it: no notification, no “message deleted” placeholder. In a private chat only two people can delete for both — you or the other person. If you didn't, and nobody else has been in your account (Settings → Devices lists every active session), they did.
Can the chat be recovered?
Not from Telegram. There is no trash, support doesn't restore chats, “recovery apps” don't work, and the ones that ask for your number and login code are after your account. Only what existed outside the chat can remain:
- screenshots and forwarded messages — in Saved Messages or other chats;
- photos and videos in your gallery, if auto-save was on;
- a chat export, if you made one earlier in Telegram Desktop;
- text in notifications — on Android, in notification history if it was enabled.
If the chat held something important — agreements, amounts, addresses, promises — it is better to calmly ask the person to send it again, or to put it in writing somewhere else. Arguing about what a deleted chat said is pointless without a copy: neither of you can prove it.
Why people delete chats
Usually for ordinary reasons: a habit of clearing chats so others can't read them, freeing up space, a breakup, wanting to take back something said in the heat of the moment. The deletion itself says nothing about what was in the chat — Telegram deliberately made it simple and traceless.
How to keep your conversations from now on
You can't stop the other person from deleting a chat. You can make sure you keep a copy of what was sent to you. Telegram has a built-in mechanism for that: a bot connected to your account through the chatbot section (in your profile: “Edit” → “Chatbots”; Premium not needed).
The bot saves messages in the private chats you choose as they arrive. If the other person later deletes messages or the whole chat, the bot sends you what was there and shows that they were the one who deleted it. It works only from the moment you connect it — anything deleted before that stays gone.
