Deleted Telegram photos and videos: where to find them and how to recover
Inside the chat, a deleted photo cannot be restored — Telegram removes it exactly like text: from its servers and from every device. There is no trash for chats, and Telegram support can't bring it back.
But unlike text, a photo often gets copied somewhere else first: to your phone's gallery, its trash, Saved Messages or a folder on your computer. Here is where to check, starting with the most likely place.
Where to check
- Your phone's gallery. If “Save to Gallery” is on in Telegram (on iPhone, “Save to Photos”; under Settings → Data and Storage), every received photo is copied to the phone. Deleting it in the chat doesn't touch that copy. Look in the Telegram album or by the date the picture arrived.
- The gallery's trash. If the photo was in your gallery and got deleted there, it stays in the trash for a while: on iPhone, the “Recently Deleted” album for 30 days; in Google Photos and Samsung Gallery, the “Trash” or “Bin”, usually 30 days or more.
- Saved Messages and other chats. A forwarded photo is a separate copy. If the picture was forwarded to Saved Messages or to someone else, deleting the original doesn't affect it. Telegram's search with the “Media” filter makes this quick.
- Your computer. If the photo was opened or saved in Telegram Desktop, check Downloads → Telegram Desktop.
- Another device that is offline. While a tablet or laptop with Telegram stays offline, the photo may still be visible in the chat there. Once it connects, it disappears.
What not to do
- Don't trust “Telegram photo recovery” apps. They scan the same gallery and trash you can open yourself — or they ask for access to your account.
- Never share your Telegram login code. Finding a photo doesn't require it. Whoever asks for it is trying to take over your account.
- Don't empty your gallery or its trash while you search. If a copy of the photo survived anywhere, it is most likely there — and emptying the trash removes it for good.
Timed photos and secret chats. A photo sent with a self-destruct timer disappears after viewing — that is the point of it, and it can't be saved. In secret chats Telegram also blocks screenshots. Such photos never reach your gallery or any bot.
How to stop losing photos
The simplest option is to turn on “Save to Gallery”, at least for private chats. The downside: your gallery fills up with everything, and nothing tells you when the other person deleted a photo — you simply won't know.
The other option is a bot connected to your account through Telegram's chatbot section (in your profile: “Edit” → “Chatbots”; Premium not needed). It saves messages in the private chats you choose — including photos, videos, voice messages and files — as they arrive. If the other person deletes a picture, the bot sends you a copy and tells you who deleted it. Attachments are kept for a limited time, stated in the privacy policy.
Common questions
Can I recover a photo someone deleted in Telegram?
Not inside the chat. There is a chance only if the picture was saved outside it: in your phone's gallery with auto-save on, in its trash, in Saved Messages, or on your computer.
Where is the setting to save Telegram photos to the gallery?
Settings → Data and Storage → “Save to Gallery” (on iPhone, “Save to Photos”). You can choose which kinds of chats it applies to.
Can Telegram support recover deleted photos?
No. Once a photo is deleted in a chat, Telegram no longer has it, and support cannot restore it.
Can I save a timed (self-destructing) photo from Telegram?
No. A timed photo disappears after viewing, and in secret chats Telegram also blocks screenshots. Neither auto-save nor bots receive such photos.
