Telegram chat backup: do you need one, and what does it protect against?
For ordinary chats, Telegram is the backup. Cloud chats live on Telegram's servers and sync to every device you sign in on — a new phone or a reinstall brings them all back after login. That is why there is no Google Drive or iCloud backup option like in WhatsApp: there is nothing for it to do.
But sync is not the same as a backup. It copies every change to every device — including deletions. Three situations are not covered at all, and each needs a different kind of copy.
What Telegram's cloud already covers
- New phone or reinstall. Sign in with your number and all cloud chats, media and folders come back. Nothing to restore by hand.
- Android and iPhone alike. The chats are not stored in the phone's backup, so there is nothing to set up in Google Drive or iCloud — switching between Android and iPhone loses nothing either.
- Several devices at once. Phone, desktop and web see the same history at the same time.
Gap 1: deletions sync too
If a message or a whole chat is deleted — by you or by the other person using "Delete for both" — that deletion is synced to every device. The cloud does not keep an older version. This is the most common way people lose a conversation they wanted, and the cloud offers no protection against it by design.
Gap 2: secret chats are never in the cloud
Secret chats exist only on the two devices where they were opened. Log out, reinstall or switch phones, and they are gone — that is the point of the feature. No backup tool can copy them; if a secret chat matters, it has to live on as a screenshot or be moved to a regular chat.
Gap 3: losing the account itself
Everything in the cloud is only reachable through your account. If it is banned, if you lose the phone number and cannot sign in, or if Telegram deletes it after the inactivity period set in Settings → Privacy and Security → Delete My Account → If Away For, the chats go with it.
How to back up against each gap

What no backup can do
Every method above works forward from the moment it is set up. None of them can reach back to messages that were already deleted before you exported or connected a bot — Telegram no longer has them, so nothing can copy them. Apps that promise to "restore" old deleted chats are either not working as advertised or are after your login code. A backup is something you set up before you need it.
About "backup bots" on GitHub and elsewhere. Some tools ask you to log in with your phone number and code so they can read your whole account. That gives them the same access you have — including the ability to sign in as you. A bot connected through Telegram Business never asks for a code: you connect it yourself in Telegram's settings and choose which chats it sees.

Does Telegram back up chats automatically?
Cloud chats, yes — they are stored on Telegram's servers and come back on any device after you sign in. Secret chats, no — they exist only on the two devices where they were opened.
How do I back up Telegram chats on Android or iPhone?
For cloud chats you do not need to: they are not part of the phone's backup and restore on their own after login. For a copy outside Telegram, use Export Telegram Data in the Desktop app, or a bot that saves messages as they arrive.
Does Telegram use iCloud or Google Drive?
No. Chats are stored in Telegram's own cloud, not in the phone's backup, so there is nothing to enable or restore there.
How do I restore a Telegram chat backup?
Cloud chats restore by simply signing in. A Desktop export is an archive for reading, not something Telegram can re-import into the app. Deleted messages cannot be restored from Telegram at all.
Can a backup bring back messages that were already deleted?
No. Any backup only covers what existed when it was made. Messages deleted before you exported or connected a bot are gone from Telegram and cannot be copied.
