Zorge → Posts → Deletion notifications
Does Telegram notify you when someone deletes a message?
No. When someone deletes a message for both sides — or “unsends” it — Telegram sends no notification and leaves no placeholder. Unlike WhatsApp, there is no “This message was deleted” line: the message simply disappears, as if it had never been there.
It works the same in the other direction: if you delete your own message for both, the other person isn't told. The same goes for deleting an entire chat.
What each side sees
| Action | Is the other person notified? | Any trace in the chat? |
|---|---|---|
| A message deleted for both | No | No — it just disappears |
| A message deleted only for yourself | No | The other person still has it |
| A whole chat deleted for both | No | The chat disappears or empties |
| A message edited | No | Yes — an “edited” label, but not the old text |
| A screenshot taken | Only in secret chats | In secret chats, a service message |
Can you unsend a message in Telegram?
Yes, and with no time limit. In a private chat you can delete any message for both people — your own or theirs — even months later. Long-press the message, choose Delete and tick “Also delete for [name]”. In groups you can delete your own messages for everyone; deleting other people's messages requires admin rights.
What deletion can't reach is everything copied before it: a notification that already appeared on the other person's phone, a screenshot, a forward. More on delete for both.
So how do you know a message was deleted?
From Telegram itself — mostly you don't. You might notice if:
- you saw a notification, but the message isn't in the chat;
- a reply now quotes a message that is no longer there, or the conversation suddenly doesn't add up;
- the chat list showed a new message preview that later vanished.
None of this tells you what was deleted. For that, a copy has to be made before the deletion.
Getting notified about deletions — and seeing what was deleted
Telegram lets you connect a bot to your own account through the chatbot section of your profile (“Edit” → “Chatbots”; Premium not needed since May 2026). Such a bot receives the messages in the private chats you choose as they arrive — and Telegram also tells it when a message is deleted or edited.
That is exactly what Zorge does: when the other person deletes or edits a message, the bot sends you a notice with what it said. It works only from the moment you connect it, only in the private chats you pick, and you can switch it off with one tap.
Common questions
Does Telegram notify when someone deletes a message?
No. Telegram shows no “message deleted” placeholder and sends no notification; the message simply disappears from the chat.
If I unsend a message on Telegram, will they know?
Telegram won't tell them. They may still have seen it already — in a notification, on screen, or in a screenshot taken before you deleted it.
Is there a time limit to unsend a Telegram message?
No. In private chats you can delete any message for both people at any time, including the other person's messages.
Does Telegram show that a message was edited?
Yes, with an “edited” label next to the message, but the original text is not shown.
Does Telegram notify screenshots?
Only in secret chats. In regular chats, taking a screenshot sends no notice.
