How to read Telegram messages without being seen
Telegram marks a message as read (two check marks) the moment you open the chat. There is no setting to turn read receipts off in private chats. What works is reading the message without opening the chat: in the notification, or in the chat preview.
What works
- The notification. Read the text in the notification or on the lock screen and don't tap it. Turn on message previews in Settings → Notifications if they're hidden. Replying from the notification marks the chat as read.
- Chat preview. On iPhone, press and hold the chat in the list; on Android, press and hold the chat's avatar. A preview opens without marking messages as read — as long as you don't open the chat from it.
- Long messages: the preview shows the latest messages, so for a long thread it works only partly.
What doesn't work
- Airplane mode. You read offline, but the read status is sent as soon as you reconnect.
- “Mark as unread”. It only changes things for you; the sender already sees two checks.
- “Ghost mode” apps and modified clients. They require logging in with your number and code — that's handing over the whole account, and unofficial clients can get it restricted.
What Telegram Premium changes
Premium has a hide read time option: the other person still sees two check marks, just not the exact time you read it. It's reciprocal — with it on, you don't see their read time either. In groups, small groups show the sender who has read a message, regardless of this setting.
The other side of “seen”. Once a message is read, the sender can still delete it for both — and you get no notification. A bot connected through Telegram's chatbot section (“Edit” → “Chatbots” in your profile; Premium not needed) saves messages in the private chats you choose as they arrive and sends you the ones the other person deletes.
