Telegram secret chat disappeared: why, and can it be recovered?
A secret chat that has disappeared cannot be recovered. Unlike regular chats, secret chats are never stored in Telegram's cloud — they exist only on the two devices where they were started, encrypted end to end. When either device loses them, there is no other copy anywhere.
That is the whole point of the feature, not a bug. Below: the usual reasons a secret chat vanishes, and what to do if something in it mattered.
Why secret chats disappear
- You logged out or reinstalled Telegram. Secret chats live in the app's local storage on that device. Logging out or reinstalling wipes them.
- You switched phones. A new device doesn't receive secret chats — they don't sync. The same applies to logging in on a tablet or computer.
- The other person deleted it. Deleting or clearing a secret chat removes it on both devices.
- The other person logged out or reinstalled. The chat ends on their side; yours may stay, but nothing new can arrive.
- A self-destruct timer was set. Messages with a timer delete themselves after being read.
- The account was deleted — by its owner or through inactivity self-destruct.
Can a secret chat be recovered?
No — by nobody. Telegram never had the messages (they are encrypted on the devices with keys it doesn't hold), so support can't restore them. A phone backup doesn't help either: after reinstalling, Telegram doesn't bring secret chats back. Any service claiming to “recover Telegram secret chats” is either useless or after your account; never give anyone your login code.
What may still exist: screenshots (if the chat allowed them), photos you saved to the gallery, or the chat still being open on the other person's device.
Where secret chats work. They are available in Telegram's mobile apps and the macOS app, but not in Telegram Desktop for Windows and Linux or in web versions. If you look for a secret chat on your computer and can't find it, it's not deleted — it was never there.
If you need to keep something from a secret chat
The only way is to save it outside the chat while it exists: write it down, save shared files, or move the conversation to a regular chat for things you want to keep. Regular cloud chats survive phone changes and reinstalls; secret chats deliberately don't.
