Lost the phone number on your Telegram account — what actually works
What actually works depends on one thing: do you still control that phone number, even temporarily? Telegram logins run through SMS or a call to that exact number — there's no separate password recovery. If the number still reaches you somehow, the account is recoverable. If someone else has it now, realistically it isn't.
If you still have the SIM, just can't receive texts right now
Traveling, no signal, phone broken but SIM intact — put the SIM in another phone, or wait until you're back in range, then log in as normal with the code Telegram sends. Nothing special needed.
If the SIM is lost but the number is still yours
Contact your carrier for a replacement SIM with the same number (most carriers do this same-day with ID verification). Once the number is live again, log in with the SMS or call code as usual.
If the number was disconnected or reassigned to someone else
This is the case with no clean fix. Telegram's own policy is deliberately strict here: they generally will not transfer an account to a new number without the ability to verify through that old number, precisely because phone numbers get recycled to new people by carriers — helping "recover" access without that check would just as easily hand the account to whoever the number belongs to now.
There's a narrow backup path if you had it set up in advance: a 2-Step Verification password plus a recovery email, added ahead of time in Settings → Privacy and Security. Without that already in place before losing the number, there is no working alternative.
Be careful with anything claiming "Telegram account recovery without phone number." No legitimate process exists. Services offering it for a fee, contactable through Telegram or WhatsApp, are after something else — usually your other accounts' credentials or a payment for nothing.
What happens to the account if it's never recovered
Telegram deletes accounts that stay inactive past the self-destruct period set in Settings (default 6 months) — everything in them goes with it, permanently. There's no appeal for that specific case; it's simply what the setting is for.
Connecting a bot through Telegram Business keeps a running copy of messages in the chats you pick, outside the account itself. It doesn't get your number back — nothing can — but it means the conversations that mattered aren't only sitting in an account a lost SIM can take down.
Common questions
Can I recover my Telegram account without the original phone number?
Only if you set up 2-Step Verification with a recovery email in advance. Without that already in place, Telegram has no way to verify it's really you, and won't transfer the account.
What if my SIM is lost but the number is still mine?
Get a replacement SIM from your carrier with the same number, then log into Telegram normally with the SMS or call code.
What happens to a Telegram account if the phone number gets reassigned?
Telegram's policy is not to help transfer access without verification through that number, since the new owner of the number could otherwise take over someone else's account.
