Editing messages in Telegram: time limit, notifications and edit history
You can edit your own messages for 48 hours after sending them. Long-press the message and choose Edit. The other person gets no notification — the message just changes, and a small “edited” label appears next to the time.
Telegram does not show what the message said before. There is no edit history, for either side.
How to edit a message
- Phone: long-press your message → Edit, change the text, confirm with the check mark.
- Desktop: right-click → Edit, or press the Up arrow in an empty input field to edit your last message.
- Media: you can change a photo's or file's caption, and replace the attached photo or file itself.
The limits
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How long can I edit? | 48 hours after sending |
| Can I edit other people's messages? | No, only your own |
| Is the other person notified? | No |
| Is there a visible sign? | Yes, an “edited” label |
| Can anyone see the original? | Not in Telegram |
After 48 hours the Edit option disappears. If you need to correct an older message, the alternative is to delete it — that works without a time limit in private chats — and send a new one.
Can you see what a message said before it was edited?
Not in Telegram itself — the “edited” label is all you get. If the original text was in a notification that arrived before the edit, you may still see it there; on Android, notification history can keep it for a day if it was enabled.
To see the original reliably, a copy has to be saved when the message arrives. That is what a bot connected through Telegram's chatbot section does (“Edit” → “Chatbots” in your profile; Premium not needed): when the other person edits a message in a chat you chose, it sends you both versions side by side. Common questions
How long can you edit a message on Telegram?
48 hours after sending. After that, the Edit option is no longer available for that message.
Does Telegram notify when you edit a message?
No. The other person isn't notified; the message only gets a small “edited” label.
Can I see the original of an edited Telegram message?
Not in Telegram. Only a copy saved before the edit — a notification, a screenshot or a bot that stores messages as they arrive — shows the original.
Can I add a photo when editing a Telegram message?
You can edit captions and replace an attached photo or file. A plain text message can be edited as text.
