How to see deleted Telegram messages on PC
In a private chat, a message deleted for both sides is gone from Telegram Desktop too — there is no recycle bin on the computer, and the local cache doesn't keep it.
There are two exceptions worth knowing: in groups and channels where you are an admin, Recent Actions shows deleted messages for 48 hours, and a chat export made earlier keeps everything it captured. For private chats, the only way to see future deletions is a copy saved when the message arrives.
Groups and channels: Recent Actions (admins only)
If you are an admin, open the group or channel → its name at the top → the “⋯” menu or Manage → Recent Actions. Telegram shows what happened in the last 48 hours, including deleted messages with their text and who deleted them. Regular members don't have this, and it doesn't exist for private chats.
A chat export made earlier
Telegram Desktop can export a chat or your whole account: open the chat → “⋯” → Export chat history, or Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram data. The export is a snapshot: it keeps what existed at that moment and won't include anything sent or deleted afterwards. If you exported before the message was deleted, it is in that folder. Windows and macOS notifications
If a message popped up as a notification and you didn't open it, its text may still sit in the Windows notification centre or macOS Notification Centre. Read it there before clicking — clicking opens the chat where the message is already gone.
What won't work
| What is offered | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| “Recover from the tdata folder” | Deleted messages are removed from the local database. Whoever asks you to send your tdata folder is asking for a ready login to your account — this is a common way accounts are stolen. |
| Data-recovery programs | They restore deleted files, not messages inside Telegram's encrypted cache. |
| Writing to Telegram support | Support doesn't restore deleted messages — Telegram removes them from its servers. |
| Telegram Web instead of Desktop | Same account, same result: the message is gone everywhere. |
For the future: copies that show up on the computer too
Since May 2026 any account, without Premium, can connect a bot through the chatbot section (profile → “Edit” → “Chatbots”) and tick private chats. The bot keeps a copy of each new message and, when the other person deletes or edits one, sends you the original in your chat with it. That chat is part of your account, so you see it in Telegram Desktop, on the web and on your phone alike.
It covers private chats only — not groups, channels or secret chats — and nothing from before you connect it.
Common questions
Does Telegram Desktop keep deleted messages?
No. When a message is deleted for both sides, Telegram Desktop removes it too. Only admins can see deleted group and channel messages in Recent Actions, for 48 hours.
Can I recover deleted Telegram messages from the tdata folder?
No. Deleted messages are removed from the local database. Never send your tdata folder to anyone — it works as a login to your account.
Can I see deleted messages in a private chat on PC?
Only if a copy was saved before the deletion: an earlier export, a notification you didn't open, or a bot connected through the chatbot section.
Does a bot need to be connected from the computer?
You connect it in your profile settings on any device. The copies then arrive in your chat with the bot, which you see on every device.
