Telegram Saved Messages disappeared or deleted: where they went and what to do
Most of the time Saved Messages are not gone — they just look different. Telegram now groups Saved Messages by the chat they were forwarded from, so the familiar single feed can seem empty or scrambled. Switching the view back takes one tap.
If you actually deleted something from Saved Messages, though, it is gone for good: it is a cloud chat like any other, and Telegram has no trash for it.
Where to find Saved Messages
- From the chat list: search “Saved Messages” in the search bar, or look for the chat with the bookmark icon. On iPhone it is also in Settings, on Android in the side menu.
- If the chat list doesn't show it: it may be in the archive or outside the folder you have open — switch to “All chats”.
Why Saved Messages look different or “disappeared”
- Grouped by source. Newer versions of Telegram show Saved Messages as a list of sub-chats — one per person, group or channel you forwarded from. Your messages are inside those sub-chats. In the menu of Saved Messages there is an option to view them as a single list of messages again.
- Tags. If you use tags on saved messages and one is selected, only messages with that tag are shown. Clear the tag filter.
- Not synced yet. After reinstalling or logging in on a new device, older messages load gradually. A good connection and a few minutes usually fix it.
- A different account. If you have more than one Telegram account, each has its own Saved Messages.
Can deleted Saved Messages be recovered?
No. Saved Messages is a regular cloud chat with yourself: when you delete a message there, Telegram deletes it from its servers and every device. There is no trash, support can't restore it, and “recovery apps” that ask for your login code are trying to steal your account. A copy can only survive outside Telegram's cloud:
- a file you downloaded — check your phone's Downloads or the Telegram Desktop folder on your computer;
- a photo or video saved to your gallery;
- an export made earlier in Telegram Desktop;
- the original message, if what you saved was a forward — it may still be in the chat or channel it came from.
Limits and privacy
- Storage: Telegram doesn't set a total storage limit for Saved Messages — it is part of Telegram's cloud. The limit is per file: up to 2 GB, or 4 GB with Telegram Premium.
- Privacy: Saved Messages is visible only to you, on every device logged in to your account. It is not end-to-end encrypted — that applies only to secret chats. Anyone with access to your account sees it too, which is why two-step verification matters.
An honest note about our bot. Zorge keeps copies of messages in your private chats with other people, so that what they delete or edit stays visible to you. It does not see your Saved Messages and can't protect them — for those, a regular export from Telegram Desktop is the right tool.
Common questions
Why did my Telegram Saved Messages disappear?
Usually they didn't: newer Telegram versions group Saved Messages by the chat they came from, a tag filter may be active, or the chat is in the archive. Deleted messages, however, can't be brought back.
Can I recover deleted Saved Messages in Telegram?
No. Saved Messages is a cloud chat; deleted messages are removed from Telegram's servers and every device. Only copies outside Telegram — downloads, gallery, an earlier export — can remain.
Is there a storage limit for Telegram Saved Messages?
Telegram sets no overall storage limit for Saved Messages. Each file can be up to 2 GB, or 4 GB with Telegram Premium.
Are Telegram Saved Messages private?
Only you can see them, on the devices logged in to your account. They are not end-to-end encrypted, so protecting the account itself with two-step verification is what keeps them private.
