An alternative worth knowing about: the self-destruct timer

Same menu, lower down: "If Away For" lets you set the account to delete itself automatically after a period of inactivity (default 6 months, adjustable down to 1 month or up to a year). This is useful if you're not sure you want to delete it right now, or if you're stepping away and don't want to make the decision immediately — it does the same thing, just on a delay you control.

If you can't log in to delete it

You don't need to. If the account is unreachable to you and you have no interest in getting back in, leaving it alone means the self-destruct timer (whatever it was last set to, default 6 months) eventually deletes it on its own. There's no way to delete an account you can't log into without going through Telegram's own account recovery first.

If there's anything worth keeping first, Telegram's own export (Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram Data, Desktop only) gives a one-time snapshot of what's there right now.
