Telegram account frozen or limited: what it means and how to appeal
These are two different restrictions. A limited account can't start conversations with strangers, but still works for your contacts and for anyone who writes to you first. A frozen account is stricter: it becomes read-only — you can open and read chats, but not send anything.
Both are usually triggered by spam reports, and both are checked and appealed in one place: Telegram's official @SpamBot. Nobody else — no paid service, no "Telegram agent" in your DMs — can lift either one.
Limited: what you can and can't do
According to Telegram's own spam FAQ, an account gets limited after other users report it for spam. While limited:
- You can message people who have your number saved as a contact.
- You can always reply to anyone who messages you first.
- You can't start new conversations with people who don't have you in their contacts.
How long: for a first time, Telegram says it is most likely a few days. Repeat reports lead to longer limits. Telegram is explicit that a valid limit can't be lifted early on request.
Frozen: read-only mode
Freezing is a stricter state Telegram introduced in 2025 for accounts suspected of breaking its Terms of Service. The app shows a notice that the account is frozen, and from then on it is effectively read-only: you can still open chats and read them, but you can't send messages or post. The notice itself points to the appeal — again through @SpamBot.
Telegram doesn't publish a timeline for frozen accounts the way it does for limits, and it doesn't explain individual decisions. Treat anything a stranger tells you about "how long it will stay frozen" as a guess.
Why it happens
- Spam reports. The most common cause. Enough people tapping "Report spam" on your messages — especially people who don't have you in their contacts — can trigger a limit automatically, whether or not the reports were fair.
- Messaging patterns that look like a bot. Writing to many strangers in a short time, sending the same text to many chats, joining lots of groups at once.
- Terms of Service violations. Scams, prohibited content, or running accounts for someone else's abuse — the usual reason for a freeze rather than a limit.
- Mistakes. Automated systems get it wrong. Telegram's own FAQ acknowledges that; that is what the appeal is for.
How to check and appeal
- Open @SpamBot in Telegram — check the username is exactly that, copycats exist — and tap Start.
- It tells you whether the account is currently limited or frozen, and for limits, often until when.
- If you believe it's a mistake, follow the bot's appeal flow and answer its questions honestly and specifically: what you use the account for, and why the messages weren't spam.
- Wait. Don't create new accounts to message the same people and don't flood the appeal — both look exactly like the behaviour that caused the restriction.
If the limit was valid, the appeal won't shorten it; waiting it out is the only path.
The scam to avoid: "unfreeze services" and "Telegram support agents" who contact you or advertise a fast fix for a fee — and ask for your phone number and the login code Telegram sends you. That code isn't needed for any appeal. Whoever asks for it wants the account itself: a frozen account with a working login is still worth stealing.
What a restriction costs you
A limit is an inconvenience. A freeze that isn't lifted — or a ban after it — can mean losing access to every conversation in the account, since Telegram keeps them only there. The only protection is a copy made while the account still works: an export from Telegram Desktop (a snapshot of one moment), or a bot connected via Telegram Business that saves messages in the chats you choose as they arrive.
